The Discovery Channel’s annual Shark Week bonanza will set its sights — or teeth — on the Bay State this week when a pair of shows delving into Cape Cod sharks hit the airwaves.
After kicking off Sunday night, Shark Week will run through July 30, bringing a full week of shark-themed programming to viewers.
For Massachusetts residents or Cape Cod beachgoers, a pair of shows could look familiar.
On Saturday night, Shark Week will explore shark deterrents that scientists are testing in hopes of warding the fish away from beaches and preventing attacks on swimmers. The show — “Monsters of the Cape” — will air Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 12 a.m. on the Discovery Channel streaming service discovery+.
A blurb posted on Discovery’s website said: “Shark Week veterans Dr. Craig O’Connell and Mark Rackley dive into the Great White infested waters off Cape Cod looking to test cutting-edge shark deterrents to help keep the waters of the Cape safe for both beach-goers and sharks, before it’s too late.”
A second show, “Great White Intersection,” will document the 2018 fatal attack on a Massachusetts man off Wellfleet’s Newcomb Hollow Beach.
The Sept. 15, 2018, attack that killed 26-year-old Revere resident Arthur Medici was the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in more than eight decades.
“Great White Intersection” will look at “the resurgence of great whites off Cape Cod as the local community struggles to come to terms with a new reality,” Discovery said. The show is streaming on Discovery+.
