James Philip Hanks, 88, of Mashpee, MA passed away at his home on May 18, 2022. He was the beloved husband of the late Nina Leone Hanks, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. He will be dearly missed by all who loved him.
Jim was born in Arlington, Virginia in the middle of a snowstorm, to John and Julia Hanks. Jim was a Prisoner of War as a child on the Island of Culion, Philippines, where his father was doing research on leprosy. In 1945, the family was rescued by the 3rd Emergency Rescue Squadron and returned to the USA. He attended Newton High School before receiving his Bachelor’s Degree from Amherst College, where he was on the swim team. He later attended Boston University, where he earned his Master’s Degree. Jim and Nina Leone were married on November 20, 1955. The two moved to Mashpee in 1985, after having lived in Billerica, MA for many years.
Jim was a Captain in the Air Force and, for many years after his discharge, he flew his own plane and became a certified flight instructor. Jim also flew for the Civil Air Patrol. He was an avid Red Sox fan, and thoroughly enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, and spending time with his family and friends.
Jim worked at the Mitre Corporation as a Systems Analysis Engineer for 31 years until his retirement in 1991.
Jim was a committed volunteer for a wide variety of organizations. He was passionate about the environment and was an active volunteer and water quality sampler for the Mashpee Waterways Commission from 1992-2007, and he also trained many of the present-day water samplers. He also served as Assistant Harbor Master.
Jim was an involved member of the Monomoscoy Island Community and was one of the founders of the Monomoscoy Island Improvement Association, where he remained active as an advisor for many years.
He was also an active member of the Falmouth Rod and Gun Club, as well as the Barnstable County League of Sportsmen’s Clubs.
Jim is survived by his sister, Juliette M. Hanks of Baltimore, Maryland, his nephew John H. Hanks, his niece Donna L. Hanks, and many great nephews and nieces, friends, and colleagues.
A joint military service for James and Nina Leone Hanks will take place in late August at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA.
