BOURNE – The Town of the Bourne last week became the latest on Cape Cod to ban smoking on town beaches and recreation areas.

The move was made by the Bourne Board of Health at their July 13 meeting to amend the tobacco regulations to include a ban on smoking at town recreation areas and beaches.

“People shouldn’t be exposed to second-hand smoke,” said Bourne Health Inspector Jamie Butler, describing the Board’s thought process behind the ban, “People that want to go enjoy themselves at the beaches and transient public places where a mass amount of people come to visit shouldn’t be subjected to second-hand smoke.”

Violators will face a $300 fine.

The ban will be in effect at beaches owned by the town and where officials test water quality. Those include Barlows Landing Road, Cataumet Harbor Beach, Electric Ave, Gilder Beach, and Monument Beach.

Town officials are asking that No Smoking signs be expedited so they can be put up at recreation areas and local beaches as soon as possible.

The ban includes the use of all smoking products, including E-Cigarettes.
