Eastham – Joseph F. Moran, Jr. a longtime resident of Eastham, MA passed away peacefully on June 9, 2022, at the age of 91. Joseph was born on July 4, 1930, in Springfield, MA to the late Joseph F. Moran, Sr. and Florence Moran.
After graduating from Classical High School in Springfield, he pursued his academic studies graduating from Stonehill College in 1952 and earned his masters and PhD from the University of Notre Dame in science. Joseph embarked on a 40 - year career teaching science at Russell Sage College, Sacred Heart University and Cape Cod Community College. In addition, summers were used to pursue diabetes research at WHOI, studying environmental issues in Bridgeport harbor and water quality in Eastham. He was a member of the Friends of the National Seashore, the Eastham Conservation Commission, and the Eastham Conservation Foundation.
Joseph was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He married the love of his life Audrey on June 18, 1955 and began 58 wonderful years together raising their five children. Family vacations were spent in the outdoors camping at Nickerson State Park and throughout New England and Canada. After Joseph retired, they traveled in their Airstream RV visiting many state, national and provincial parks. Joseph and Audrey were wonderful parents who taught their children to care about others and to be involved in projects to make our world a better place. They both had lots of fun when the grandkids came for visits! Joseph also enjoyed watching Notre Dame football and the Boston Celtics.
Joseph was an active member of his church community at St. Joan of Arc for over 50 years serving as a lector, Eucharistic minister and on many church committees. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and a longstanding member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joan of Arc Conference. In 1991, Joseph and Audrey along with a small group of volunteers started the SVdP Holiday Food program. This program has grown over the years with the help of many volunteers and plays a key role in offering local assistance to families experiencing food insecurity.
Joseph is survived by his children Kathleen Moran-Wallace and her husband William of Methuen, Bridget Moran of Eastham, Mary Moran-Chenevert and husband Donald of Harwich, and Brian Moran and wife Emmy Hahn of Marblehead and the late John P. Moran; his brothers Dr. James P. Moran of Eastham, and Dr. Robert F. Moran and wife Marianne of Guilford, NH; grandchildren, Rev. Christopher Wallace, Michael Wallace, Jill and Timothy Chenevert, Cecelia and Joseph Moran as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends and family will gather for a Mass in Celebration of Joseph's life on Thursday, June 16, 2022, at 10:00 am at St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Road, Orleans, MA. Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2022, from 4-7p.m. at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans, MA 02653. Burial services will be private.
